Year 5
Welcome to Year 5!
Throughout the term we will be aspiring to be like our school captains: resilient, reflective, resourceful and reciprocal. The values of these four captains are instilled into all that we do, and the children are encouraged to incorporate these traits in their learning.
English:
All of our writing this term will be focused around the book “Survivors” by David Long. This book is a collection of short stories detailing extraordinary real-life tales of survival. As well as practising our reading skills in a variety of different ways, we will be taking all writing opportunities from this text. We will be writing diary entries as a characters from the book, poetry, and a recount. We will be practising our spelling, grammar and punctuation skills continuously throughout the term while we are writing.
Maths
In Maths, we will be focusing on converting units of length and time, geometry, positions and movement. This will be done through practical activities and challenges. Year 5 have so far concentrated on the four operations and developing a deeper understanding of applying these – this will continually be revised throughout the academic year.
Science
In science this term, we will be learning about animals (including humans) and plants. We will be looking at the different life cycles of plants and animals, alongside working scientifically to investigate the lifecycle if bacteria. In addition to this, we will be linking our Science Week learning with our topic work.
Topic
In year 5 this term our topic throughout Spring is Pathfinders. Over the course of the term, the children have been learning in depth about South America and Europe. They will now move on to look at different landmarks around the world, explore inspirational people from around the world and develop our French language skills.
We will continue to send out weekly spellings, to be tested every Monday. These spellings are uploaded onto Spelling Shed, which each child has a log in for. We will also be taking the Superhero times table tests every week. Reading diaries are checked every Tuesday morning.
