Welcome to Nursery

Your child will take part in several carpet sessions throughout the day. These include Phonics, Guided and Shared Reading, Maths, Literacy and Circle Time/Investigation. During these sessions, we will be working towards the Early Learning Goals, which your child will be assessed against at the end of the year. Your child’s progress towards these Early Learning Goals will be assessed throughout the year using a range of observational methods. If you would like a copy of the Early Learning Goals, please speak to your child’s class teacher.

When your child is not taking part in a carpet session, they will be given independent learning time to explore and play in the unit. During this time, they can access a range of activities, both indoor and outdoor, which have been carefully planned to maximise the learning opportunities of all children in the Foundation Unit

Our topic this half term is ‘Nature & Healthy Living' where we will be learning about lifecycles and exploring the natural world. We will link our carpet sessions and continuous provision activities to the topic as much as possible. In our Phonics sessions, we will be learning to recognise and write many sounds. We will be learning how to blend sounds to read and segment sounds to write. We will then be using these skills to attempt to write sentences, labels, lists and captions in a range of contexts.

The children will continue to learn about our four school captains: Captain Resourceful, Captain Reciprocity, Captain Reflective and Captain Resilience. After re-visiting how each superhero helps us with our learning, the children will choose which captain that they would like to be more like this half term and will set their own individual target to help them achieve their goal.

We believe it is very important for you to read at home with your child. Your child will bring home a book every week, which is chosen by the staff for your child to read to you. The children take part in Guided Reading and Shared Reading throughout the week, so it is essential that book bags are in school every day. We will check reading diaries every Tuesday. If your child has read at home three or more times within the week, they will get a stamp on their reading bookmark. Once their bookmark is full, they will receive a special prize. The child who reads at home the most times within the week will be crowned the ‘Reader of the Week.’

Your child will take part in a PE session at least once a week on Thursdays. Please ensure that your child has a full PE kit in school every day. All items of clothing should be clearly labelled with your child’s name. It is also recommended that your child brings a bottle of water into school each day.

We will regularly send messages to parents on Marvellous Me and there are also resources on Seesaw to help your children with their reading and writing and homework activities will be uploaded to Seesaw every half-term.
