All of our writing this term will be focused around the book The Girl of Ink and Stars, by Karen Millwood. We will begin the year by writing character descriptions and then writing a chapter of the novel from the perspective of a different character.  After this, we will be writing horoscopes and learning about cartography, which is described in the book. As we read the novel, we will be practising our inference and comprehension skills to ensure we have a deep understanding, as well as taking part in a variety of writing activities. We will continue to send home 10 spellings a week to be tested, these spellings will also be sent out on Marvellous Me and be available for the children to practise on Spelling Shed.

This term Year 6 will continue to practice their arithmetic skills once a week with an arithmetic paper, as well as working on developing our reasoning skills. We will be looking at geometry, including parts of a circle, recognising 2d and 3d shapes form their properties, plotting points on a grid and co-ordinates. We will also be looking at negative and positive numbers and bridging through 0, algebra, and ratio.

Throughout, we will be looking at combining our topics with reasoning and problem solving work.

In science this term we will begin by learning about electricity, it’s properties and how it travels. During this we will be using circuit boards, batteries, and bulbs to experiment with conductive and insulating materials. We will then move on to go into greater depth about the theory of evolution and adaptation and how animals are suited to their environment. During this we will be taking part in a lesson for our Science Crest.  All of the science that we learn, we focus on thinking scientifically and planning scientific enquires to ask interesting questions.

In year 5 and 6 this term, our topic is Globe Trotters. Over the course of the term, the children will be learning in depth about each continent. They will discuss and evaluate the similarities and differences between England and the rest of the world. They will also learn about currency, climates and trade links. In addition to this, they will be learning about significant rivers, mountains and volcanoes. We will also be studying the capitals of countries, and learning how to locate places on a map. In art, we will be learning cartography, which will be linked to the text that we are studying in English. During the term, we will also be having an RE week based on Christianity, where the children will be learning about different aspects of the Christian faith.
